What to Say and Not Say to an Anxious Child
(And What to Say Instead)

When your child is feeling anxious, it's easy to want to “fix-it”. You want to take away their fear or discomfort quickly, but sometimes the things we say can unintentionally leave a child feeling more alone with their big emotions.

Here are a few common phrases, and what you can try saying instead:
-
Instead of “There’s nothing to be afraid of,” try…
“It’s okay to feel scared. I’ll help you through it.”
-
Instead of “Just stop thinking about it,” try…
“That thought feels big right now. Let’s figure out what we can do next.”
-
Instead of “You’re fine,” try…
“You’re feeling uncomfortable. I’m right here.”

These alternative phrases help a child feel validated and supported. Instead of dismissing their anxiety, you are helping them name it, and reminding them that you are here to help.
If you’re parenting an anxious child and it’s starting to feel overwhelming, you're not doing anything wrong. Anxiety in kids is very common, and there are ways to help.

MYTH vs FACT- Child Therapy

Myth: Kids are too young for therapy.
Fact: Children can benefit from therapy, especially with parent involvement and child-friendly methods such as play and art. Early intervention helps prevent long-term struggles.

Myth: Therapy is only for "serious" problems.
Fact: Therapy addresses everyday challenges such as anxiety, transitions, grief, and self-esteem.

Myth: They will just outgrow it.
Fact: Some issues may resolve over time, but early intervention often prevents long-term emotional or behavioral difficulties.

Myth: If my child needs therapy, it means I have failed as a parent.
Fact: Seeking therapy is a sign of responsible, proactive parenting, not failure
